Job Description

Anson County Building Inspector Salary Grade: 67 Hiring Range: $46,847 – 77,387 Commensurate with Experience Position Summary The Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring that construction within Anson County complies with all applicable state and local Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical codes. This position involves conducting field inspections, reviewing plans, and enforcing compliance to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. The ideal candidate will have solid technical knowledge, sound judgment, and strong communication skills to work effectively with contractors, property owners, and the general public. Applicants must obtain Standard Level II certifications in all trades (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical) within 3.5 years of hire. Duties and Responsibilities Inspections & Permitting Perform on-site inspections and re-inspections of residential, commercial, and public buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes and approved plans. Review construction plans, specifications, and blueprints for code adherence and completeness. Issue permits, certificates of occupancy, and stop-work orders as needed. Maintain detailed records of inspections, violations, and corrective actions. Investigate complaints related to construction, zoning, nuisance, and other code enforcement issues. Prepare inspection reports and assist in legal proceedings when necessary. Technical & Customer Support In-depth understanding of local and state Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical codes. Provide technical assistance and interpret code requirements to contractors, property owners, and stakeholders. Serve as a liaison with contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to communicate requirements and resolve issues. Maintain and review detailed inspection records and reports for accuracy. Administrative & Operational Duties Working staff to coordinate inspections with contractors, builders, and property owners. Utilize inspection software and digital tools to track, document, and report field activities. Participate in regular training and continuing education to maintain required certifications and stay current on code updates. Assist in post-disaster damage assessments and related emergency response duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities Participate in ongoing training to maintain up-to-date knowledge of codes, standards, and best practices. Participate in special projects, emergency responses, and damage assessments following natural disasters. Perform other related duties as required to support the County’s mission of safeguarding public health and safety. Work under diverse environmental conditions, with occasional evening, weekend, or emergency assignments. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities In-depth understanding of local and state Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical codes. Strong ability to read, interpret, and compare blueprints and technical documents against construction in progress. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interfacing with diverse stakeholders and for clear, concise report preparation. Proficiency with digital inspection tools, plan review software, and standard office applications. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, with a keen attention to detail. Ability to work safely in diverse environments, including construction sites and areas subject to varying weather and physical demands. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required; a Vocational/Trade Degree and/or Associate’s Degree in Construction, Engineering, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of building inspection or related construction experience. Certifications Must obtain Standard Level II certifications in all trades (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical) within 3.5 years of hire. Work Environment This is primarily a field-based role that requires mobility (walking, climbing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds) and the ability to work in a range of outdoor conditions. Occasional evening, weekend, or emergency work may be required.
