Job Description

DroneSense is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable FAA Waiver & Authorization Writer to support public safety agencies in obtaining required FAA Certificates of Authorization (COAs), waivers, and airspace authorizations for advanced drone operations. This position will play a key role in enabling the safe, legal, and effective deployment of UAS (drones) by public safety entities across the U.S., particularly in support of Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs. This is a remote, part-time contract role with no travel requirements. The writer will be responsible for preparing submission-ready FAA packages based on predefined materials provided by DroneSense, including Concept of Operations, Safety Cases, and technical supplements. The writer will also participate in reviewing and responding to FAA Requests for Information (RFIs) and provide detailed updates on program documentation. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the DroneSense ecosystem and experienced in writing successful FAA Part 107 waivers, Public Aircraft Operations COAs, and other regulatory filings for advanced public safety UAS operations. This position assists in the development and submission of regulatory packages to support the operation of advanced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) under both Part 107 and Public Aircraft Operations frameworks. The work includes drafting waivers and Certificates of Authorization (COAs), preparing comprehensive technical and safety documentation, and coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and DroneSense throughout the approval process. Role Scope Developing waiver requests for operations beyond the standard limitations of Part 107, including obstruction shielding and wide-area authorizations. Preparing COA packages for public agencies, including blanket authorizations and jurisdictional airspace approvals. Supporting complex operational concepts such as Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), with emphasis on safety risk assessments, detect-and-avoid strategies, and integration of ADS-B In technologies. Providing detailed documentation packages, including CONOPS, Safety Cases, and technical supplements tailored for FAA review and compliance. Engaging with FAA representatives, Detect And Avoid manufacturers, and DroneSense to facilitate revisions, address inquiries, and support the successful approval of each submission. This work ensures regulatory alignment for advanced drone operations, enabling expanded capabilities for first responders and public safety agencies. Key Responsibilities Write, edit, and finalize FAA waiver and COA submissions for public safety clients. Review DroneSense-provided packages and integrate them into the final regulatory documents. Respond to FAA RFIs and participate in revision cycles. Update public agency UAS program documentation in compliance with FAA guidance. Ensure all documentation aligns with current FAA policy, safety standards, and operational use cases. Maintain excellent records of all submissions, statuses, and changes. Required Skills Demonstrated experience writing FAA waivers, COAs, and authorizations. Strong understanding of 14 CFR Part 107 and the FAA UAS regulatory framework. Familiarity with public safety UAS operations and Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs. Exceptional written communication, technical writing, and editing skills. Experience preparing detailed CONOPS, Safety Risk Assessments, and related documentation. Ability to work independently and manage multiple waiver tracks simultaneously. Preferred Skills Familiarity with the DroneSense software ecosystem and its operational role in public safety drone programs. FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Experience interfacing directly with the FAA UAS Support Center or Waiver Team. Background in aviation safety, risk assessment, or airspace management.

  • * A sample of a recent CONOPS submittal must be included
