The St. Louis County Juvenile Office is looking for a Deputy Juvenile Officer I in its Child Protective Services Department (Supervision).

Entry salary is typically $45,760. This rate includes 10% addition to pay.

This is a non-merit position. Recruitment for this position will be handled by the Family Court of St. Louis County. Position is eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Examples of Duties


An employee in this job class and position is responsible for performing work of marked difficulty requiring sound professional judgment. This position functions as a Deputy Juvenile Officer in the Court's Child Protective Services Department (CPS), and acts as an officer of the Court. Work involves functioning as a supervision worker for abuse/neglect cases, acting on behalf of the juvenile officer in both pre-adjudication and post-adjudication cases. As a CPS supervision worker, the position ensures care, protection, and permanency for children who are under the Court's jurisdiction for reasons of abuse/neglect. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Child Protective Services Manager. Work is reviewed through regular supervisory conferences, reports submitted, and achievement of stated goals.

Makes recommendations to the Court regarding permanency, including reporting, planning/concurrent planning goals, and progress toward those goals.
Makes recommendations to the Court regarding changes to current court orders or changes in recommended services.
Interviews and consults with Children's Division, therapist, placement providers, parents, relatives, school officials and Court attorneys, and provides reports to the court regarding said interviews.
Maintains current record check, social security checks, and address information on parents/relative case providers.
Informs parties of their rights and responsibilities regarding children placed out of home.
Monitors compliance of the parties with court orders; evaluates requests from Children's Division staff; files motions before the Court when it is in the child's best interest to return home or be removed from the home; initiates action to terminate parental rights; terminates Court jurisdiction, etc.
Ensures each child placed outside his/her home has permanency planning hearing twice a year; ensures Children's Division provides progress reports on all Court children every six months; monitors this process and evaluates the Children's Division six-month progress reports.
Informally adjusts or files petitions when abused/neglected children are referred for delinquent acts; provides the Court with dispositional recommendations.
Prepares written summary/recommendations for hearings in consultation with Children's Division worker, service providers, child's attorney (Guardian ad litem), and Court's attorney regarding final disposition, including custody recommendations; testifies in hearings, provides evidence for adjudication and justifies recommendations.



Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related social/behavioral science is required (MSW is preferred), plus at least one year of professional social work experience working with juveniles and families; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Information

All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be paid by the County. Applicants will also be required to submit to an extensive background and criminal record check.
