New Salem Preserves is an heirloom apple farm dating back to 1750, nestled in the hills of western Massachusetts. Our apples are picked from trees that are over 125 years old. We deliver apples to our local markets and produce sweet and hard cider right here at our mill. Our small New England apple farm is dedicated to producing high-quality fruit while fostering sustainable farming practices and building strong connections with our local community. Job Description We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced General Farm Manager to oversee the operations of a small apple farm in New England. This role requires a dynamic individual with a passion for sustainable agriculture, excellent leadership skills, and hands-on experience managing orchard operations. The General Farm Manager will be responsible for all aspects of farm management, from crop production to marketing and staff supervision, ensuring the farm runs efficiently and profitably. Key Responsibilities: Orchard Management:

  • Oversee the care and maintenance of apple trees, including pruning, pest and disease management, fertility, irrigation, and harvest.
  • Develop and implement orchard management plans to optimize yield and quality.
  • Monitor crop health and recommend improvements as needed.
Farm Operations:
  • Plan and manage planting, harvesting, and post-harvest handling schedules.
  • Ensure equipment and infrastructure are well-maintained and operational.
  • Manage supply inventory and order necessary materials (e.g., tools, fertilizers, and treatments).
Financial Management:
  • Develop and manage budgets, track expenses, and optimize farm profitability.
  • Monitor and analyze financial performance, making adjustments to meet financial goals.
  • Explore and implement opportunities for revenue growth, such as agritourism or value-added products.
Team Leadership:
  • Hire, train, and supervise farm staff and seasonal workers.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and productive work environment.
  • Delegate tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.
Regulatory Compliance and Sustainability:
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal agricultural regulations.
  • Implement and promote environmentally sustainable farming practices.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and innovations.
Community Engagement and Marketing:
  • Develop relationships with local markets, retailers, and community partners.
  • Oversee direct-to-consumer sales through farm stands, farmers' markets, or CSA programs.
  • Plan and execute marketing strategies, including social media and on-farm events.
Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years of experience in farm management, preferably with tree fruit or orchard experience. Strong understanding of apple production, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and sustainable farming practices. Experience managing budgets, staff, and day-to-day farm operations. Knowledge of agricultural equipment and maintenance. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and adapt to changing conditions. Proficiency in basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, farm management software). Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Capability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs. Willingness to work long hours during peak seasons. Preferred Qualifications: Degree in agriculture, horticulture, or a related field. Experience in agritourism or direct-to-consumer marketing.
