Basic Purpose of the Job:
Under general direction, picks up residential and commercial trash and recycling containers with automated mechanical operating trucking system on established and scheduled collection routes as assigned. Keeps equipment clean and in good working order. Learns and adheres to city safety standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Drive automated sanitation/recycling collection truck four to five days per week collecting common trash and recyclable material from residential and commercial containers.
  • Deliver collected material to designated facilities in a timely and safe manner.
  • Repair and replace trash and recycling containers. Provide comprehensive repair and replace information to supervisory personnel for tracking and budgeting.
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment maintenance to include daily pre-trip and post vehicle inspections. Keep equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Provide customer service by answering inquiries and instruct citizens regarding proper disposal of solid waste and recyclable material in a professional, courteous and respectful manner. Respond to service requests.
  • Communicate in a professional, courteous and respectful manner to customers as needed why garbage was not collected, such as unpaid bills, inclusion of items not permitted for handling or general disposal or failure to separate recyclables.
  • Operate small power equipment including pneumatic jackhammer, chainsaws, demo saws, and compactors.
  • Handle inquiries from and situations with members of the public in a professional, courteous and respectful manner. Report complaints to supervisory personnel immediately.
  • Train lower level workers and seasonal employees.

Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); supplemented by specialized training in construction and maintenance technology of public streets.
  • Experience performing public works operations, construction and maintenance work in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • This position is subject to non-standard working hours including weekends, and holidays.

Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.):
  • Current Colorado Class A or B Commercial Drivers license with acceptable driving record.
  • Entry - Traffic Control Flagger Certification within one (1) year.
  • Mid - Completion of CLTAP Roads Scholar I.
  • Senior - Completion of CLTAP Roads Scholar II.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for quickly and repeatedly adjusting the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Must have the ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away and to judge the distance between self and an object. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
